What is the difference between ETA and eVisitor Australia?

To travel to Australia, you don't necessarily need to go to the embassy to obtain a traditional visa. You can apply for an ETA or eVisitor to travel to Australia. What are they? What is the difference between the two documents?

What is ETA?

The ETA (for Electronic Travel Authorization) is in fact a electronic travel authorisation allowing easy travel to Australia. It is a document reserved for nationals (not only of the European Union) such as the United States, and significantly facilitates all the administrative procedures for travelling to Australia.

To obtain your passport, simply apply online and fill in a simple form containing your passport number and all your personal details. All you then have to do is wait a few minutes to a few days at most (on average 72 hours are required) to obtain a reply and a valid electronic travel authorisation.

eVisitor: definition

The eVisitor visa was the first online visa introduced by the Australian authorities, and is therefore older than the ETA. However, it operates in the same way as the electronic travel authorisation, but is dedicated to the main European countries. It is valid for one year and allows stays of less than 3 months with a tourist purpose but also business trips, for studies or internships. The eVisitor must be applied for on the Australian Department of Immigration website. You have to fill in a form (completely in English) and it can be quite complex. It is not possible to check the information you have entered at the end of your application and so if there are any errors in the form, you then have to call the Australian Immigration Service in London to be able to amend it.

If you are not bilingual, you can use the services of a specialist agency which will be better able to help you obtain an eVisitor for Australia smoothly and with ease.

How do you differentiate between the two?

The ETA has a number of advantages over the eVisitor, particularly in terms of the response time for the application and the ease and simplicity of the various steps involved in obtaining your precious pass to Australia.

The ETA is therefore the equivalent of the eVisitor, but can only be used by European travellers if the trip has been booked through a travel agency (for holders of a European passport). If the trip is not organised by a travel agency, European nationals must apply for an eVisitor. Nationals of countries covered by the ETA or the eVisitor for Australia can apply for both documents, without restriction.
