Which visa is best for visiting Australia?

You've decided on the location for your next holiday. Direction: Australia. But you've got lots of questions about the various administrative procedures involved in getting to Australia. Do you need a visa? And which one? We'll tell you all about it.

Do I need a visa to travel to Australia?

If you wish to enter the country, you must have a valid visa (unless you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen). All nationals of other countries must be in possession of a visa.

What types of visa are available? Which one can you apply for?

  • the classic tourist visa allowing you to visit the country or come to study for a maximum of 3 months. With this visa, you can also come and do voluntary work in Australia.
  • the Working Holiday Visa or Working Holiday Visa allowing young French nationals to come to Australia for 12 months to discover the country, the different populations and Australian culture and to work on the language. This visa allows you to work and study in Australia. Since July 2019, the age limit for obtaining this visa has been raised from 30 to 35!
  • the eVisitor allowing you to stay in Australia several times, always for a period of three months, whether you are coming for tourism or business. It can be used up to 12 months after the application has been validated. This visa is particularly aimed at holders of a European passport. It is free of charge.
  • The Electronic Travel Authorization which allows you to travel to Australia as many times as you like. Each visit must last a maximum of three months. Applying for an ETA is free but you have to pay a service charge when you apply online. This costs around AUD$20 (€12).

Depending on the length of your stay and your reason for going to Australia, the visa may be different. You can find out more and apply at the Australian Embassy in your country of departure or at the Consulate closest to your home. The Australian Department of Home Affairs has also set up a website where you can apply for a visa (again, depending on the type of visa).

For visas requiring an online application, you can use a specialist agency to help you with the process. This makes the application even simpler, and means you can get the visa that's right for you, stress-free, for just a few extra euros!
